CARMEL PLAZA- CHARMING SPECIALTY SHOPPING IN A GARDEN SETTING

Located at Mission and Ocean, Carmel Plaza is Carmel’s own version of a shopping mall.  I know. You are thinking, “A MALL, how could this be allowed in CARMEL, the mecca of small, one-of-a- kind boutiques.”

IMG_0804

BUT, as in all things Carmel, this “mall” has a unique flavor. Three levels of shops surround this lovely plaza

IMG_7274

with its lush plantings

IMG_7245

IMG_7206

and comfortable seating,

IMG_7208

outdoor dining and live music.

The Plaza is pet-friendly.

Social canines can gather at the Fountain of Woof,

DSC00519

the nation’s first official doggie drinking fountain. The fountain, created by “pupular demand” is a dogs-only drinking fountain.

DSC00521

They then hangout in the courtyard of the town’s open-air shopping mall. In fact this seems to have become the place to congregate after the morning romp on the beach.

Owners enjoy a hot cup of “JOE”  from Carmel Coffee and Cocoa Bar

IMG_7207

and the dogs have a field day.

Most shops have an open-door policy for pets, and give plenty to keep them satisfied, from free treats to the snazzy striped pupwear and organic biscuits.

I recently toured the plaza with my camera to record the current shops. Most shop keepers were kind enough to allow at least a camera shot from outside the door.

Hi…Thank you for a great post on The Plaza…it is such a friendly place to visit…you never feel like you are in a mall. It has a small town intimacy, yet it’s rich in the quality stores it offers. Love the Cos Bar for all my makeup needs and the Cheese Shop is a weekly stop for us!! It has the best cheeses, baguettes, olives, crackers, etc. for entertaining…and just a few blocks from home.

I appreciate your attention to detail of our Carmel Plaza. It is one of our favorite places to see spring flower designs in Carmel and sit a while.. Although I prefer the Carmel Plaza of old when the cheese shop used to give samples, the stores were not so slick and pretentious and the book store was there. In years past it used to have more of a Carmel feel to it. This plaza needs a bookstore it seems so wrong without one.. With the exception of Sur La Table, we do not shop, just visit the courtyard and leave as the stores are not our syle but the Plaza staff does a good job with flowers year around. . I have many happy memories here as a family with my Mom over the ldecades.

We too so miss the bookstore. It was our favorite stop in the Plaza. I loved their local section and their knowledgable staff. Many stores have changed since we first moved to Carmel and yes there has been a trend toward glamour. That said, it does provide a nice counterbalance to the stores along Ocean giving many choices to tourists and locals.

The Thunderbird was such a wonderful place!

Oops, wrong plaza, I think! I moved away in 1997; so much has changed!

Thank you Linda – this is a very thorough blog on one of my favorite “malls” – we love to sit by the Fountain of Woof and enjoy coffee from the Carmel Coffee Bar. And as always, great pictures! – Lynn

Hi — This was a great post – the Plaza doesn’t always get the recognition it should and the stores are really great. Your photos show not only how many stores are actually there, but captures the essence of this unique “mall”.

Noted that someone mentioned The Cheese Shop does not give samples – heck, ya they do — our only place to buy cheese and they are always giving even the regulars a little bit of this and that!

Thanks for putting this on your blog; it was enjoyable to see it all and it’s really the only place I shop if I go into Carmel by myself.
