A Preview of Coming Attractions- Concours on the Ave. In Carmel-by-the Sea

In 2007, Carmel introduces another automotive event – The Concours on the Avenue.

Each year the event staging improves dramatically.

Because Ocean Ave. and 16 blocks of downtown close to traffic, I am out with my camera snapping shots of Carmel’s whimsical architecture unhampered by cars in the foreground.

I watch tents being set up. Tasteful pots of flowers ,picket fences and garden benches are the barriers. How Carmel!

The first several years of the event there is competition among the shops for the best “auto” themed window display.

Stewards in green golf carts and wide-brimmed straw hats help everyone find their assigned places. The cars show by class and back into parking spots on Ocean.

Several of our friends are showing in this event  which is a mix of American cars,Foreign cars, Luxury Cars, Muscle Cars, Hot Rods and Sporting Cars. The Micro Cars and Porsches are my personal favorites.

Car owners “stage” the cars and settle in for the fun of telling their personal stories.

Many are being shown by the original owners who have wonderful memories to share. These are the cars that inspired many a youthful dream. On my first date with my husband , he picked me up in a 1958 turquoise blue Plymouth Convertible. So we love these stories.

Class and major awards are presented late in the afternoon by Tiffany.

This event is free to the public. The cars that qualify for the event pay an entry fee that funds the event and the rest of the proceeds go to The Carmel Foundation, a non – profit organization that  provides a wide variety of services to Monterey Peninsula seniors. As much as I hate to admit it, I qualify as a “senior” ( now I know why my grandsons hate the word “tween”). The foundation has given me my flu shot and hosts lunches and classes that are fabulous.

This year the event is to be held on Tuesday August 16th. There are multi marques from 1940-1973 with Porsche and Ferrari through 1989. On no, the Ferrari are in town again!

I will try to get some shots for you. They are an especially glamorous group.  The jewelry shops, especially the wrist watch shops, are overjoyed. Red Ferrari will be parked in front of the Cypress Inn for sure.

I am learning to identity cars by the sounds of their engines. If you are coming to Carmel next week, don’t miss this event.  Look at cars and the shop windows decorated in an automotive theme. And if you tire, slip into a store and make a purchase – I recommend shoe stores. Or relax with lunch or dinner in the wonderful restaurants that line Ocean.
