CYPRESS COTTAGE
Our trips to Carmel-by-the Sea are not as often as we wish. But even when three months have passed and we visit again, we are delighted and amazed with all the changes that have happened in that brief time.
Most of those changes involve the renovation or building of homes. On a typical week day, I can hear the sounds of sawing and hammering as well as the sounds of surf and bird call.
After turning up the heat in our house and visiting Ocean Ave. and the beach, the first thing we do is walk the streets of the 1 sq. mile to see what is “up” with the homes.
It is hard to walk by Cypress Cottage and not notice it. The house sits up on a corner lot which must have a lovely view of Carmel Beach. The owners are talented gardeners with an eye for color.
I see the cottage for the first time while across the street
and must cross over to get a closer view
the gate is just smashing
Starting up the stairs of the enclosed garden, I notice all the potted plants.
The patio at the top is paved in Carmel Stone. The rounded door and overlapping wood shingles are definitely in the “Comstock Cottage” style. The wonderful french doors let the owners enjoy the temperate Carmel climate. It is fun to open the doors and let indoor and outdoor merge. The furnishings on the patio encourage this.
The pot to the right of the front door contains potato vine on a trellis. This is a wonderful vine in Carmel – and it could actually take over the front of this home if allowed to.
Notice the colorful pots of annuals attached to the trunk of the huge tree in the patio center.
On our last visit , there was a FOR SALE sign in the yard. I checked the listing:
CYPRESS COTTAGE
$1,890,000 3 bd, 2ba 1680 sq Ft.
“Just a few blocks to Carmel Beach and Ocean Avenue, nestled behind the trees you will find the Cypress Cottage: a quintessential Carmel cottage with charming details throughout. Absolutely turn-key, this property features a beautiful Carmel stone patio, three fireplaces and a private deck off the master suite. This cottage is what fairytales are made of. www.CourtneyGJones.com and www.CourtneyJonesProperties.com.”
The following photos are from the real estate listing shots.
Check our all the fireplaces. Again, Carmel’s temperature is usually in the 50′s to 60′s and so perfect weather for a warming fire.
And that deck off the Master Bedroom
The price is very reasonable by Carmel standards. Whoever buys this house will have made a good investment and have purchased a lovely home. But when I run this by my husband he vetoes it. Oh well, you can’t blame a girl for trying.

Oh…I love seeing this cottage and all it’s beautiful pots of flowers. What great inspiration for my own cottage. When I had my cottage painted last summer….I looked to photos of cottages in Carmel for color inspiration and painted my windows and trim in a blue green. I love your blog.
I have already moved in mentally and have asked the cook to bring cocktails to the deck….
I would love to own a Cottage home. They are so cute . would love to see the inside of one
